Rooflight / Velux®

This is probably the most straightforward way of converting your loft, and definitely worth considering if your current loft space is already large enough to accommodate the new space you require.

Rooflight installation in Surrey

As you will not be extending externally, this type of conversion is generally the most viable option if there are any problems with planning, you live in a conservation area, or if you are on a tight budget.

By adding windows in line with the existing pitch of your roof, you are able to allow a significant amount of light into your living space, which can be really useful in making smaller areas feel more spacious and airy.

The fact that you are converting within the confines of your existing space and are not extending upwards or outwards means that this type of conversion will probably be very quick to complete and thus the least disruptive.

One consideration worthy of note with this type of conversion is that in order to comply with the current Building Regulations, there are strict stipulations regarding the minimum amount of headspace for above the stairs. Depending on the ceiling height of your loft space, this may result in there being limited options as to where the staircase can be fitted. If the staircase can only be positioned in the middle of your loft room, then this could potentially adversely impact the way in which you are able to use the space. We will of course go through this with you in full detail and cover all viable options should it be of concern for your project.

Dormer

A dormer loft conversion extends vertically from a sloped roof with the wall of the new structure projecting at a 90 degree angle to the floor. Internally, a dormer conversion creates a significant amount of additional headroom, with vertical walls and horizontal ceilings, which allow for ease of furniture placement within your new living space.

TYPES OF CONVERSION

Hip-to-gable

A hip-to-gable conversion is literally converting your hipped roof (a roof with 3 or 4 slopping sides), to a gable (a triangular vertical wall intersecting two slopping roof sections). The gable wall will extend to the same height as the existing ridge of the roof. A hip-to-gable conversion is only ever completed on the side sloping sections of the roof.
