Hip-to-gabel

A hip-to-gable conversion is literally converting your hipped roof (a roof with 3 or 4 slopping sides), to a gable (a triangular vertical wall intersecting two slopping roof sections). The gable wall will extend to the same height as the existing ridge of the roof.

Hip-to-gabel loft conversion in Surrey

A hip-to-gable conversion is only ever completed on the side sloping sections of the roof. For this reason, it is a conversion which is only suitable for end-of-terrace, semi-detached or detached houses. It is possible that you may be able to convert a single storey property in this way. However, they are more likely to present with problems regarding structural strength and whether they are equipped to withstand the additional strain.

It is probably safest to approach a hip-to-gable extension with the need for planning permission in mind. Although hip-to-gable extensions have come under the remit of permitted development within the last decade, they can quite often exceed the 40-50 cubic metre allowance, especially if you are thinking of investing in a double hip-to-gable conversion. This is not to say that getting planning permission, if required, will be problematic, and it is certainly not necessary in every case, but it is something to bear in mind when planning your extension. We will of course assist you with this every step of the way in any case.

A hip-to-gable conversion can considerably improve your loft space and the options available to you in terms of room functionality. The aforementioned problem with staircase placement is pretty much always eradicated, and being able to have a full staircase leading up to your new living space significantly improves the flow and versatility of your space, allowing it to perform to your optimum requirements.

If you are dreaming of creating a space that provides you with more than just one room, a hip-to-gable conversion could certainly give you that, and you will find that, with our commitment to matching all materials to the rest of the building, it fits effortlessly with the rest of your property.
